Diamonds
in the Rough
Zeni and the Legacy of Japanese American Baseball
During
WWII, over 120,000 Japanese Americans, including the program's
narrator Noriyuki "Pat" Morita (The Karate Kid, Happy
Days), were forced into remote internment camps. Behind the
barbed wire, baseball helped many people survive this humiliating
ordeal.
This
poignant documentary pays tribute to Kenichi Zenimura, commonly
referred to as "The Father of Japanese American Baseball."
However, it is much more than the biography of one man, it is
the story of a legacy in which baseball helped transcend bigotry
and hatred to bring pride and respect to Japanese Americans
who loved the game. And thanks to Curator Kerry Yo Nakagawa,
this program is a lasting treasure of the Diamonds in the Rough
International Exhibit dedicated to Japanese Americans in baseball.
