Henry Sugimoto: Painting an American Experience
By Kristine Kim

Artist Henry Sugimoto was born in 1900 in the town of Wakayama in central Japan, the grandson of a displaced samurai. His career spanned California, Paris, Mexico, and two World War II internment camps in Arkansas. When he died in 1990, he had been living for more than two decades in New York City's Harlem.

Henry Sugimoto: Painting an American Experience follows Sugimoto on a remarkable journey that would transform his art, challenge his identity, and in the end deepen his humanity. This first-ever survey of the works of a gifted, complex, and engaging painter offers a unique perspective on the experience of Japanese in America and the role of art in interpreting that experience.
