Films of Remembrance 2014

A one-day film series held in conjunction with the Bay Area Day of Remembrance, commemorating the 72nd anniversary of the signing of Executive Order 9066, which set the wheels in motion to forcibly relocate some 120,000 persons of Japanese ancestry into American concentration camps during WWII.

2 PM – Searchlight Serenade: Big Band Music in the WWII Japanese American Incarceration Camps – Meet musician Anthony Brown, former inmate and musician Yone Fukui of the G.I. Band at Heart Mountain, and artist Amy Uyeki. Co-presented by Asian Improv aRts.

3:45 PM – Honor & Sacrifice: The Roy Matsumoto Story Meet producers Lucy Ostrander, Don Sellers and Karen Matusmoto. Co-presented by the National Japanese American Historical Society.

5:00 PM – Story Art of Camp – “Tule Lake,” “Hiro,” and “Searchlight Serenade” (animation excerpt)

“Tule Lake” – A short film by Michelle Ikemoto. The short film is the recipient of several student awards including nomination for Annual Annie 2013.

Hiro: A Japanese American Internment Story” a film by Keiko Wright. This film is winner of the Gold Medal in the Documentary category at the 39th Student Academy Awards.

Searchlight Serenade (animation) Searchlight Serenade draws from animation derived from original Japanese style woodblock art by Amy Uyeki.

The Untold Story: Internment of Japanese Americans in Hawai’i – Hear from JCCH Executive Director Carole Hayashino on how the discovery of Honouliuli continues to unfold, including a recent staging from the set of Hawaii Five-0. Co-presented by the Hawaiian Chamber of Commerce of Northern California and the Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California.
