Esther Ruth (Kambe) Oda
Esther Ruth (Kambe) Oda, a Nisei from Seattle, Washington, recalls the incidents that affected her after the attack on Pearl Harbor: having to leave her studies at the University of Washington, her father’s arrest by the FBI and internment at Fort Missoula, Lordsburg, Santa Fe, and Crystal City Internment Camps; burning her Japanese belongings; being incarcerated at Puyallup Assembly Center and Minidoka WRA incarceration camp. Oda recalls her and her family’s positive attitudes feelings of acceptance in the face of adversity, despite being separated from one another. Oda discusses her unique experience outside of camp as a military wife to a member of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team.
