Lily Chiyoko (Tsukahara) Hiraoka
Lily Hiraoka describes her experience as a young Nisei woman forcibly removed to the Tulare Assembly Center before being sent to Gila River WRA Concentration Camp. Hiraoka explains how after the attack on Pearl Harbor, her father, alongside other community members, was arrested by the FBI and held until he was eventually moved to the Tulare Temporary WCCA “Assembly Center” and reunited with family. Hiraoka also describes her experiences at Gila River, including meeting and marrying her husband and watching him face hostility after he volunteered for the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. Hiraoka ends the interview with a message to young people urging them to be a good person in the face of adversity.
