Michiko Tashiro
Michiko Tashiro grew up in Turlock, California. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, she and her family were evicted and imprisoned at Merced Temporary WCCA “Assembly Center” and later Amache WRA Concentration Camp. Tashiro recalls some of the memories from her life in camp as a young girl, from social activities to the dust storms that plagued Amache. Upon leaving Amache, Tashiro’s family lived in a tent camp for a year before moving to San Francisco. Tashiro attended school at Girls’ High, city college, and later UC Berkeley before working for the State Department of Public Health as a research analyst. Later in her life, Tashiro developed an interest in writing and sharing stories from her time in camp. In this interview, she discusses the dynamic between her siblings and parents before, during, and after camp and how her family was able to endure difficult times together.
