Miwako (Yoshikawa) Yamashiro
Miwako Yoshikawa Yamashiro discusses her experiences growing up in a rural farming community in Placer county before she and her family were evicted and imprisoned at Tule Lake WRA Concentration Camp as a teenager. She speaks of her day to day life in camp and what it was like to be a girl growing up under camp conditions. Yamashiro witnessed the tension between Japanese Americans in Tule Lake that occurred after the implementation of the “loyalty” questionnaire; in addition, her own brother and uncle were jailed because of their refusal to answer the questionnaire, and renounced their American citizenship.
