Sadako Nimura Kashiwagi
Sadako Nimura Kashiwagi was born and raised near Sacramento, California, and attended grade school in Auburn. During the war, Kashiwagi and her family were incarcerated at Marysville Temporary WCCA “Assembly Center” and Tule Lake WRA Concentration Camp. Kashiwagi recalls her daily life and activities in Tule Lake, from crafting to studying and doing calisthenics at Japanese school. After leaving Tule Lake, Kashiwagi’s family eventually returned to their old home in Newcastle. At age 14, Kashiwagi left home to work as a domestic while attending school in San Mateo. After high school, she attended San Mateo junior college and later a junior college. Kashiwagi moved to Berkeley, where she met her husband, Hiroshi, and worked as a home-economics teacher. The couple moved to San Francisco, where they raised their family. Kashiwagi was eventually able to attend library school and become a children’s librarian, retiring after 13 years.
