Sato Hashizume
Sato Hashizume was born in Japan but grew up in Portland, Oregon. When the “exclusion orders” were issued against Japanese Americans, Hashizume’s family was forced to sell her father’s business and were evicted and imprisoned at Portland Temporary WCCA “Assembly Center”. The family was then incarcerated at Minidoka WRA Concentration Camp in Idaho. Hashizume recalls her personal memories from her time in camp. When Minidoka closed, Hashizume and her family were again forced to move, this time settling in Salt Lake City, UT. She stepped up at the age of 14 to help provide for the family, working as a domestic. Hashizume graduated high school and attended nursing school, earned an additional bachelor’s degree, and began a fulfilling nursing career. She discusses learning more about the incarceration experiences of other Japanese Americans years after the war’s end and contributing to a multicultural approach to nursing care.
