Shigeyuki Doi
Shigeyuki “Shig” Doi, a Nisei man, was born in Auburn, California, in 1920. Doi was one of the last Japanese Americans to be drafted into the United States Army in 1942. He started training in Camp Grant, Illinois, in a mixed unit and worked at the station hospital as a medic. Doi was then moved to a segregated unit in Camp Blanding, Florida, and trained as a replacement for the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. During this time, Doi’s family was evicted and incarcerated in Tule Lake WRA Concentration Camp and later Amache WRA Concentration Camp. Doi describes the bitterness he felt being drafted into the United States army to fight for his country while his family was incarcerated by the government. He discusses his thoughts on redress and reparations and feels strongly that the Issei deserve an apology the most for what they lost and endured during the war.
