Tadao Yamashiro
Tadao Yamashiro grew up in Penryn, California before he and his family were evicted and imprisoned at Marysville Temporary WCCA “Assembly Center” and later the Tule Lake WRA Concentration Camp. While at camp, he worked as a carpenter before becoming a hog farmer and played in a band. When Tule Lake became a segregation center, his family opted to stay; Yamashiro recalls conflicts that took place at the camp after segregation and discusses the Hoshidan . After camp, he and his family returned to farming before Yamashiro attended school at the University of California, Davis before going on to work for the geological survey and Department of Water Resources. Yamashiro feels that there was a positive atmosphere for Japanese Americans in Penryn both before and after the war. He describes how he has accepted his wartime incarceration and reflects on positive experiences in camp.
