Today, the location of the camp\u00a0would \u00a0have been\u00a0roughly bounded by Airport Drive and Popeye Lane, North 7th, and North 12th avenues (<span class=\"m_4681036820567156803gmail-geo-default\"><a class=\"m_4681036820567156803external m_4681036820567156803gmail-text\" href=\"https:\/\/tools.wmflabs.org\/geohack\/geohack.php?pagename=Crystal_City_Internment_Camp&amp;params=28_41_27_N_99_49_22_W_region:US-TX_type:landmark\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/tools.wmflabs.org\/geohack\/geohack.php?pagename%3DCrystal_City_Internment_Camp%26params%3D28_41_27_N_99_49_22_W_region:US-TX_type:landmark&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1505434190513000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGx0xa3FRRrwtc4VWf7Lp8r79b5Aw\"><span class=\"m_4681036820567156803gmail-latitude\">28\u00b041\u203227\u2033N<\/span><span class=\"m_4681036820567156803gmail-longitude\">99\u00b049\u203222\u2033W<\/span><\/a>). The facility was originally a Farm Security Admission\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"m_4681036820567156803gmail-geo-default\">migrant<\/span><span class=\"m_4681036820567156803gmail-geo-default\">\u00a0labor camp. Crystal City was\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"m_4681036820567156803gmail-geo-default\">run by the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) from 1942 to 1948. Peak population was 4,000. By 1944, the camp held 2,104\u00a0persons of Japanese ancestry,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"m_4681036820567156803gmail-geo-default\">nearly\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"m_4681036820567156803gmail-geo-default\">half of whom\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"m_4681036820567156803gmail-geo-default\">were forcibly taken from Peru, both Japanese immigrant residents and their children who were Peruvian citizens.\u00a0 Also held at this camp were persons of Japanese, German, and Italian ancestry from Hawai&#8217;i, other parts of the U.S., and Latin American countries. Unlike most other Department of Justice facilities, Crystal City was a family internment camp\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"m_4681036820567156803gmail-geo-default\">and boasted about\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"m_4681036820567156803gmail-geo-default\">the<\/span><span class=\"m_4681036820567156803gmail-geo-default\">\u00a0swimming pool constructed by the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"m_4681036820567156803gmail-geo-default\">internees<\/span><span class=\"m_4681036820567156803gmail-geo-default\">\u00a0as an example of its child-friendly properties. In truth, the U.S. government provided little to no funds for textbooks or teachers for their schools.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">At the end of the war, the U.S. government wanted to rid the Western Hemisphere of these &#8220;enemy aliens&#8221; from Latin America. Declaring them to have entered the U.S. illegally, the U.S. government proceeded to deport these &#8220;illegal aliens&#8221; to war-devastated Europe and Japan, even though many wanted to return to their homes in Latin America. Those internees of Japanese ancestry from Peru were initially denied return by the Peruvian government, even if they were Peruvian citizens or married to Peruvian citizens. With the help of Wayne M.
