Merced held 4,669 persons of Japanese ancestry, who came from central California communities such as Merced, Walnut Grove, Chico, Marin, and Napa. The camp consisted of over 200 tar paper barracks, 11 mess halls, 5 laundry buildings, 40 shower areas, 30 toilet areas, and many revamped cattle \/ horse barns used to house incarcerees.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The camp was closed on September 15, 1942 and was in operation for 5 months.
