Of the 10,161 acres, 9,560 were secured from the Farm Security Administration. The land was quite swampy and heavily wooded with a water level just below ground level. Rohwer was configured in a tight grid of 500 acres on flat ground. There were eleven unpaved north\/south streets numbered First to Eleventh, and eleven east\/west cross streets numbered A through K. Rohwer, like Manzanar, reflected the belief in the use of standard plans for maximum efficiency without regard for topography. Construction began on July 1, 1942 just a few weeks before work on Jerome began. opening on September 18, 1942.
