Half of the barracks were infield of the race track. The temporary housing consisted of unfinished barracks and barely cleaned horse stalls which were inadequately\u00a0prepared to house people. Some of the\u00a0rooms in the grandstands were converted into housing for single men.\u00a0There were only 24 latrines, and they afforded little privacy. Tanforan\u00a0was surrounded by a barbed wire fence and eucalyptus trees.
