On behalf of the Consortium, we want to first thank you for your participation and generous support last year.
This year, the community will commemorate 42 years since the first Bay Area Day of Remembrance (DOR) program back in 1979, on Sunday, February 16, 2020 at the AMC Kabuki 8 Theatres in Japantown from 2-4 pm. Our theme is: “Never Again Is Now – Carrying the Light for Justice.”
Our keynote speaker will be Reverend Michael Yoshii of Alameda Buena Vista United Methodist Church. In addition, the Dr. Clifford I. Uyeda Peace and Humanitarian Award will be presented to Chizu Omori, long-time Bay Area activist.
The highlight of the program will be the Candle Lighting Ceremony. The honored candle lighters are those who were unjustly incarcerated during WWII, and advocates for social justice causes of our time. They will light candles for each of the ten concentration camps plus one candle for the Department of Justice camps. The ceremony continues with a featured interfaith invocation led by the Japanese American Religious Federation (JARF), and a procession to the post-DOR community reception at Konko Church
In recent years, the Day of Remembrance grows more critical. Please give generously, as we must raise public awareness, so that the ones before us can be properly remembered, and that we teach the next generation of those important lessons, and act to stop history from repeating itself.
