1860 Pacific Overtures: The First Japanese Embassy to America

Come learn about this historic journey of the first Japanese Embassy (on the USS Powhatan) and its escorts on the Kanrin Maru to America in 1860. This voyage en route to San Francisco marked the historic turning point which ended Japan’s centuries-old seclusion from the Western World and the beginning of diplomatic relations between Japan and the United States.
