notable portraits @ Japanese Cultural & Community Center of Northern California, 1840 Sutter Street
Mural Objective: The Mural will enhance the Peace Plaza’s attractiveness, educate the public via interactive technology, and increase interest in visiting Japantown. Our hope is that the Mural will draw patrons to our small businesses, hotels, and restaurants that have suffered much through the pandemic. It will enliven the community and show our community pride.
Nomination Criteria: We are taking nominations for Japantown trailblazers who:
● Established and built Japantown and who have made significant contributions to continue to build and preserve it
● Advanced our diverse stories and history through education, the arts and culture
● Played a leadership role in social justice and civil rights issues A subset of about 8-10 from this list will be featured as portraits on the Mural but the final list will remain on the website indefinitely as a testament to those who inspired community building and advocacy. Nominations process: Up to (3) Nominations will be accepted on this form online here: https://bit.ly/sfjacl_nominations. If you have more than 3 nominations, send them via email at info@sfjacl.org until midnight, December 31, 2022.
A panel of community leaders appointed by the SF JACL Board will meet on January 12, 2023 and January 30, 2023 to select the 8-10 portraits for the Mural. Members of the community and public are invited to these meetings and will be given opportunities to participate during a public comment period. The final list of nominees will be available on the SF JACL website in February, www.sfjacl.org.
